In 1927 the Colombian coffee growers organized themselves to create an institution that would represent them both nationally, and internationally to defend their rights and seek ways to improve their quality of life. Since the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC) came into existence it has become the largest rural NGO in the world. It is a non-profit organization and is not affiliated with any political party.
The Federation is the foremost coffee association in Colombia, with presence in every rural region where coffee is grown. The work of the Federation revolves around the coffee growers and their families ensuring Colombian coffee is grown in a sustainable manner, strengthening common interests within coffee-growing communities while positioning Colombian coffee as the best Coffee in the world. The Federation represents more than 500 thousand families dedicated to growing coffee through an organization that is characterized as profoundly democratic.
The FNC also supports Colombian growers in other areas such as: research and development to optimize the costs of production and improve the quality of coffee, technical assistance to coffee growers through the Extension Service, development of quality practices ensuring the Colombian coffee grower receives market premiums and carries out programs to benefit the growers, their community and their environment (see Sustainability That Matters).
The Federation has obtained multiple recognitions related to its business management, social responsability, and to its publicity strategy of the Juan Valdez brand.
